The Wave (Laskin Gateway Sculpture)

Oceanfront

The Wave (Laskin Gateway Sculpture) is a attraction in Oceanfront, Virginia Beach, best for public-art fans passing through the resort area, a landmark marking arrival at the Oceanfront, night photography.

A 35-foot stainless steel sculpture by Indianapolis artist Jeff Laramore rises out of a 35-foot-wide reflecting pool inside the Laskin Road roundabout, marking the 'Laskin Gateway' entrance corridor into the Oceanfront resort area. The Public Art Virginia Beach Foundation ran a national search for the piece, with jurors from Virginia MOCA and the Chrysler Museum of Art making the final call; the open framework of angled steel plates and cables is designed to let wind pass through while suggesting movement even though the piece is stationary. Programmed LED lighting sets it apart after dark. It was dedicated October 12, 2013, and today functions as the visual 'you've arrived' marker for traffic coming off Laskin Road toward the beach.
