False Cape Beach

Sandbridge

False Cape Beach is a beach in Sandbridge, Virginia Beach, best for solitude, long hikes and bikepacking, primitive beach camping, experienced day-trippers.

The most remote beach in Virginia Beach — arguably in Virginia: False Cape State Park's Atlantic shoreline sits beyond Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge with no road access at all. You reach it on foot, by bike, by boat, or on the park's seasonal tram, which means the miles of undeveloped barrier-spit sand between the refuge and the North Carolina line are often close to empty even in July. There are no lifeguards, no concessions, and only primitive facilities; pack in water and pack out trash. Note that the refuge's interior dike trails — the main walking route in — close November through March to protect wintering waterfowl, so check the through-route status before an off-season trip.
