Upper Wolfsnare

Great Neck

Upper Wolfsnare is a attraction in Great Neck, Virginia Beach, best for colonial architecture fans, Constitution-era history buffs, a summer-only hidden gem.

Built around 1759 by Thomas Walke III — whose son, Thomas Walke IV, later voted to ratify the U.S. Constitution at Virginia's 1788 Ratifying Convention — Upper Wolfsnare is a two-story Georgian brick home laid in Flemish bond, with a center passage, raised paneling, and wainscoting original to the house. Listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register in 1974 and the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, it has been owned and maintained since 1966 by the Princess Anne County/Virginia Beach Historical Society, which still runs the tours. Access is genuinely limited — open only Wednesdays, noon-4pm, in July and August — with 30-60 minute tours and bus parking for groups; the historical society can arrange group tours outside that window by request. The tree-lined lane up to the house, including old crepe myrtles, is worth the trip on its own.
